Celebrate Refugee Week 2025 with Community Action: MK in Milton Keynes and explore the theme 'Community as a Superpower' through film, art, and local events.
Film Screenings at MK Gallery:
- 17 June, 7:00–9:30pm – Short films sharing refugee and migrant stories, including local films created by Living Archive and MKIAC (MK Islamic Arts and Culture), followed by a discussion.
- 22 June, 2:00–4:00pm – Screening of Fremont, a heartfelt story of a young Afghan woman starting a new life in California, with a reading by author Sonia Saada from her book If the Sea Was in Ink.
Other highlights include the Art in the Park Festival by MKIAC (afternoon/evening) and the Yoga Festival by Yoga for Health Alliance (morning) on 21 June, alongside activities from local organisations supporting refugee communities – such as the Ukrainian Appeal and UK Welcomes Refugees - also marking the campaign. More events will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

This seminar will explore how Afghan refugee community members are navigating identity, resilience, and belonging in the UK, and how communities and organisations can better support empowerment and inclusion. It's an ideal event to attend in the run-up to Refugee Week, setting the tone for deeper reflection and engagement.
The session will feature:
- Maryam Rahmani (Womankind Worldwide), a passionate advocate and community organiser with lived experience, sharing insight into the challenges and strengths within Afghan refugee communities.
- Dr Mir Abdullah Miri, a researcher and academic at The Open University, with a focus on forced displacement and refugee wellbeing.
